Faculty Work Load

****DRAFT*****DRAFT*****DRAFT*****DRAFT*****DRAFT*****DRAFT*****DRAFT*****

Workload and Office Hours

Members of the full-time faculty shall be assigned a teaching load consisting of a standard minimum of thirty (30) equivalent* semester hours per academic year. Faculty whose load is defined in terms of contact hours must meet the 30 credit hour standard. This standard must be demonstrated by a formula approved by the Vice President for Teaching and Learning that equates contact hours to credit hours. A normal teaching load is 15 credit hours per semester with no fewer than 12 credit hours and no more than 18 credit hours during any one semester.

No faculty member may teach in excess of thirty-six (36) equivalent semester hours per year or 18 equivalent semester hours per semester without requesting and receiving advanced approval in writing from the Vice President for Teaching and Learning. Only the Division Chair may request an overload for a faculty member from the Vice President.

The faculty workweek is understood to be normally five consecutive days during which time classes and/or office hours may be scheduled. However, the Division Chair may develop schedules that do not conform to the five-day norm for faculty who participate in the Evening/Weekend Program or for faculty who participate in other systems of delivery that may not conform with the norm.

Full-time faculty will maintain a minimum of ten scheduled office hours per week. Faculty may schedule up to two office hours per week by appointment. Faculty office hours are to be posted in a conspicuous area near their offices. Each faculty member must spend the equivalent of two hours per week per semester on academic advising. Advising time may be spent in the Advising Center based on a 1:1 ratio to office hours. The College officer or designee responsible for advising may schedule this advising during times around registration or during periods of particular need for academic advising. It is the responsibility of the faculty member to document with his/her Division Chair should he/she choose not to schedule his/her advising hours during the regular week. All arrangements must be agreed upon in advance and on a semester by semester basis between the Chair and the full-time faculty member.

Faculty may be assigned teaching or other professional duties on any day that the college is open during the academic year. The assignment of specific days and day/evening hours and campus location of during the academic year may vary from semester to semester.

Each full-time faculty member is assigned a home campus. A faculty member may request a change in home campus and the College may require a change in home campus to meet College needs.

The Division Chair prepares an individual instructor schedule for each academic term. Every effort will be made to see that a faculty member who teaches late in the evening will not be assigned classes early the following morning.

The Division Chair shall ensure that a faculty member is scheduled for thirty (30) equivalent semester hours per year. The Division Chair and the individual faculty member must agree upon overload.

Faculty members are expected to perform a number of professional responsibilities as part of their professional assignment. Neither reduction in workload credit, alternative time, nor additional compensation is associated with these professional responsibilities. A list of full-time faculty responsibilities considered to be professional responsibilities can be found in the full-time faculty position description.

*Alternative time, also known as released time, may be used for load and is considered to be the equivalent of teaching for the purpose of workload. Alternative time or released time cannot be used for overload. Alternative time or release time are terms used to describe work load credit assigned by the College to teaching faculty members to perform non-teaching responsibilities in lieu of teaching responsibilities. These assignments are in addition to, and do not replace the non-teaching responsibilities that are part of the professional responsibilities of teaching faculty. For the purpose of assigning workload credit for these assignments, one equivalent semester hour is equivalent to 45 clock hours of such assigned activities. Alternative time assignments can only become effective with the beginning of a semester. No monetary compensation is permitted for alternative or released time. A faculty member should petition their Division Chair for release time. Final approval for released time will be made by the Vice President for Teaching and Learning. Chairs, Coordinators and Directors whose release time is established by their job description are not expected to use this petition process for their release time.
