Academic Standards of progress
Policy:
The student’s academic status is part of their official educational record. It is the responsibility of Office of the Registrar to ensure that this policy is implemented
All students must maintain a G.P.A. of 2.00 in order to achieve and/or to remain in good academic standing,
Students who have attempted eleven credits or fewer whose GPA falls below 2.0 shall be placed on academic alert. Academic alert shall not appear on students’ permanent records, but will be shown on grade reports as advisory information to students. Such students must meet with designated counselors and the students’ academic advisor in order to have their subsequent registration and schedule cards approved.
Students are placed on academic probation when they fall below the following Grade Point Averages for any semester in which they are enrolled in the College.
Minimum Cumulative
Credits Attempted* Grade Point Average
0-16 1.0
17-32 1.50
33-48 1.75
49-COMPLETION 2.00
* At least 75% of the credits attempted must be completed..
Students are placed on academic probation as a warning that they are continuing to have difficulty meeting the academic standards of WVNCC. The College offers assistance to all students placed on academic probation by establishing meetings with a College counselor and the student’s academic advisor, by referring students to College support services such as tutoring and by recommending enrollment in developmental courses when appropriate.
A student on academic probation for two consecutive semesters will be suspended from the College for one full semester. A student who returns to the College after this suspension is subject to the provisions of academic probation.*
In order for a student who has been placed on academic probation to register for the subsequent semester they must meet the following conditions:
A. They must consult with designated counselor and their academic advisor in order to have their registration and schedule cards approved.
B. They are limited to enrollment in no more than two courses a semester and, if appropriate in the judgment of the Counselor, will be required to undertake a program designed to remedy academic deficiencies.
C. Academic Probation will be lifted when the student achieves a G P A of 2.0
The grades of A, B, C, D, F, K, I, W, and AW are to be used to determine a student’s compliance with these standards of progress.
Incoming transfer students will have their transcripts evaluated. If their minimum GPA for credit hours attempted falls below Northern’s standards, they will be placed on Academic Probation.
All students have the right to appeal their academic status to the College Academic Appeals Committee.
Those students who have registered before receiving the previous semester’s grades are subject to the limitations and requirements of this policy.
A student on probation may enroll for one course in Summer I and one course in Summer II; however, Summer I and Summer II are not regarded as semesters in the exclusionary period for students on probation or on suspension.
D. This academic policy will be in effect for students on financial aid beginning with the very next full semester after being signed by the President. For all other students, this policy will be in effect two full semesters, not including summer sessions, after being signed by the President.
Rationale:
Professional Standards, Federal law and State System Board of Directors rules provide a rationale and justification for a policy on standards of progress.
Standards of progress, are an institutional mark of excellence and a statement of published standards that students are expected to follow in order to be successful. Just as teachers establish standards of achievement and student success for their classes and grade; so too, an institution committed to excellence and to service has a similar professional obligation to communicate to the student their expectations - even if they be minimal expectations - of what constitutes success at the institution.
Series 60 of the State College System Board of Directors requires an institution to establish standards of progress. A portion of Section 2.1 reads: "The institution and its constituent colleges and schools shall define and promulgate, consistent with the rules and procedures of the board, ...the criteria for maintenance of satisfactory academic progress...." Series 60 permits an institution to place a student on probation and suspension for academic reasons.
Students who are on federally funded financial aide are required to follow a standard of academic progress in order to continue to receive financial support. This requirement has been a nation-wide requirement for over a decade. The source of federal authority for mandating standards of progress for students receiving financial aide can be found in CFR 34 Part 668.7(5)(c) of the General Provisions approved 1983, and amended Dec. 87, April 94, and Nov. 94.
Implementation:
1. Students will be notified of their academic status on their final grade report.
2. Students who are placed on academic alert, academic probation or academic suspension will be expected to meet with a Counselor before any subsequent registration and follow the requirements of this policy.
3. The appeal procedures established by the Academic Appeals Committee to address program probation and program dismissal shall apply to this policy.
4. The Registrar will provide the supervisor of the Chief Student Development Officer with a list of all students placed on Academic Alert, Academic Probation and Academic Suspension. A duplicate copy of this list will be provided to the Vice President for Budgeting and Finance, and to the Financial Aid Office. The Chief Student Development Officer is responsible for distributing this information to the student’s academic advisor. This information should be available to academic advisors who work in the advising center.
