  • Big Brothers/Big Sisters In-School Program - Addie Ricker

G. Pickett introduced Addie Ricker who explain this site-based mentoring program for at risk students. She is currently seeking volunteers, for at least an hour a week, on a flexible schedule, to help students at Richie School. Individuals will need three character references and a police background check. This program is different from the normal Big Brother/Big Sister situation because all contact between mentor and student occurs at school. Currently Becky Johnen and Peggy Miller are in the program and can answer questions.

  • Class Delay/Class Cancellations

There was a lengthy discussion over the events of the ice storm and class delays, as well as with class cancellations before registration. Several points of view were expressed. On a motion by M. Goldstein with a second by D. Poffenberger, G. Pickett was directed to write a letter to the President expressing the Senate's concern over lack of faculty input into the class delay decision, the haphazard cancellation of classes, and the lack of concern with part of term classes and the delay. The motion passed unanimously. A. Vavra volunteered to help draft the letter.

  • 1999 - 2000 Calendar

G. Pickett reported that the 1999 - 2000 calendar has been modified to reflect the recommendation of the joint committee of faculty and administration (S. Becker-Gorby, S. Bungard, T. Danford, P. Mancha, G. Pickett, A. Vavra)

  • Draft Policies

G. Pickett reported that P. Mancha is seeking faculty input on three draft policies: Standards of Progress, Sabbatical Leave, and Faculty Workload. All of these are available on the Senate webpage.

  • Other

R. Jennette reported that the National League of Nursing (NLN) will be conducting an on-campus visit March 2, 3, and 4, 1999. She indicated that all faculty are invited to a meeting with the evaluators on Wednesday, 3 March 1999 in the HA board room.

C. Stokes reported on staff/faculty "errors" on student registration cards. Apparently, BANNER now generates an error report, and these reports and connected to specific staff (and faculty) members. This was revealed when an employee was confronted with "errors". At this time, faculty are advised to be as careful as possible and to document "irregularities" approved.

  • Adjournment

With no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 3:15 p.m. on a motion by R. Honeman and a second by D. Poffenberger. The next regularly scheduled meeting of the Senate will be Friday, 26 February 1999, at 2:00 p.m. in the Culinary Arts room, HA, Wheeling Regional Campus.

Respectfully submitted,

Thomas R. Danford, Secretary
