Minutes: 25 April 2003

N. Krupinski called the meeting to order at 2:00 p.m. in the TELECOM Rooms on all three campuses.

• Minutes: The approval of the minutes from the March 2003 meeting were approved as published. They are on the Senate webpage, http://www.northern.wvnet.edu/~tdanford/senate. (Stokes/Watson)
• Registration and BANNER on the Web - R. Yeager

R. Yeager emphasized the following points concerning registration and advising procedures:

• Faculty must notify the Center offices and the Campus Director's office if their office hours are changing during the semester.
• Faculty are responsible for giving their advisees pin numbers for registration. These need to be provided to the student even if the advisor is signing the registration card.
• Faculty need to contact any unregistered advisees prior to summer in order to avoid difficulties during the summer period when faculty are off campus.
• Faculty raised the following concerns:

• Faculty are unable to help other students within the same academic program unless they are listed as their advisor.
• Who is responsible for raising caps for courses listed as staff?
• Will their be a stipend for faculty participating in advising during the summer?

• Rita stated that she would address these concerns with Enrollments Management.

• Old Business: There was no old business.



• New Business:

G. Norton spoke about the following General Education issues:

• Due to the administrative reorganization, G. Norton asked for faculty senate support of the general studies courses being designated as a program with a designated program director.

• Discussion ensued about the necessity of program direction for the AA and AS programs. T. Danford questioned whether one program director could cover all three of these areas.
• M. Riley questioned the graduation status of a student with "General Studies" courses.
• K. Herrington raised the question of the evaluation all programs in terms of their technical and general education components.

The Faculty Senate recommends to Dr. John Hunter, President, that a program director be appointed to oversee the A.A. and A.S. programs and include the General Studies courses. The A.A. and A.S. programs will still retain their separate identities.

This motion (Danford/Herrington) passed unanimously.

• The General Education committee had looked at the 15 general education competencies. The committee evaluated the core course MCG's to identify which competencies were covered in individual courses. The committee attempted to maintain consistency in the competencies covered regardless of which core course was chosen by the student. G. Norton had concerns over the Curriculum Committee's actions on the state list of courses designated as general studies core.

• K. Herrington stated that the Curriculum Committee had voted on this proposal, but had not moved all of the Humanities Core over at this time.

• G. Norton asked for revised MCG's of all general studies courses in order to establish the competencies being covered in each course. Competencies may need to be assigned to courses in order to assure that students are meeting all general education competencies prior to graduation.

Nominations for Professor Emeritus:

The Faculty Senate recommends Dr. Regina Jeanette and Audrey Secreto for Professor Emeritus. (Watson/ Berry)

Board of Governors Faculty Representative:

The Faculty Senate unanimously elected Tom Danford for the Faculty Senate Representative to the Board of Governors. (Lucki/Watson)

The Great Teachers Seminar will be held at the end of June. Any faculty interested please notify Nancy Krupinski.

General Education Symposium

Dr. Hunter would like faculty volunteers to put together a General Education Symposium for the return week in the fall.

Grace Norton is interested in participating in this symposium.

Dr. Hunter has suggested a "Critical Thinking Workshop" by Dr. Elder or Dr. Paul for Fall. G. Norton recommended the purchasing of the guides "Minature Guide to Critical Thinking Concepts and Tools" for each faculty member.

The Faculty Senate recommends to Dr. John Hunter, President, that the book, "Minature Guide to Critical Thinking Concepts and Tools" be purchased for the faculty, but decline the speakers.

This motion (Danford/Norton) passed unanimously.

HEPC policy 2224: The upcoming change dealing with the modification of section 10.5 of Series 9, Academic Freedom, Professional responsibility, Promotion, and Tenure, to comply with state code.

• C. Stokes requested that faculty senate pursue clarification of the terminology utilized in the passage concerning faculty status.

• M. Davis stated that ACF was discussing this matter and will e-mail information as it is posted.

• Committee Reports

• Adjournment: With no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 3:00 p.m. (Norton/Watson). The next regularly scheduled meeting of the Faculty Senate will be Friday 22 August 2003 in the TELECOM rooms on all three campuses.
