DRAFT POSITION DESCRIPTION--10/29/99 AATF

FULL-TIME FACULTY



Full-time faculty members are primarily academic leaders who develop and implement academic programs and courses and guide students in the multiple aspects of the learning process which lead to student career and educational goal attainments. Faculty are actively involved in development of College programs, policies, practices, and support materials and services which enhance the learning process. They represent and promote the academic program to potential students and employers. Faculty report to a division chair. Faculty establish goals for attainment consistent with College initiatives and continuous improvement and annually participate in self-assessment and goals updates. Each faculty member is assigned as a team member in a specific academic degree or certificate program, or as a team member responsible for general education or developmental education, and with identified subject/course assignments consistent with qualifications and College needs. Faculty fulfill the following responsibilities for teaching and advising, curriculum and assessment, professional development, and service, consistent with applicable federal and state laws and policies, guidelines, standards, and processes of the North Central Association, WV Board of Directors, and the College.



I. Teaching and Advising.



A. Each faculty member develops and implements course activities which focus on student learning, consistent with adopted course expectations and applicable program goals, utilizing instructional and evaluation materials, delivery systems, and methodologies which result in student achievement by diverse students and utilizing assessment methods for continuous improvement. More specifically, each faculty member:



1. Provides each student, no later than the first class session or its equivalent, a written course outline of activities and expectations consistent with the catalog description and designed to achieve adopted course goals, scope, outcomes, entry and exit competencies, and planned activities

2. Provides each student, no later than the first class session or its equivalent, with written information concerning evaluation methods and grading, attendance, and other policies which will be applicable in the course

3. Assists and guides students in matters related to attainment of course outcomes during scheduled class sessions and at additional times and by utilizing methods made known to the students



B. Each faculty member advises students toward goal attainment by providing academic advice and guidance, and fulfills the following responsibilities:

1. Consults with students and guides them in development of realistic and advisable educational plans which lead toward appropriate student career goal attainment;

2. Monitors advisees' progress toward goal attainment, including a minimum of one interaction per semester and maintenance of advisee's record;

3. Advises students regarding options and resources available to them, including assistance in connecting with the workplace and/or transfer college;

4. Advises students regarding appropriate course selection and sequences.

II. Curriculum and Assessment



A. Each faculty member is a team member in an identified academic program or general education or developmental education area. As a member of that team, each faculty member assumes responsibilities for curriculum development in that program or area, with an expectation for utilizing information from employers, secondary and higher education faculty, students, and other WVNCC faculty responsible for related courses and programs, and applicable accreditation and agency guidelines. In coordination with other faculty in the program, each faculty member:



1. Develops program descriptions, goals, entry and exit competencies;

2. Identifies and recommends program course requirements and sequences;

3. Identifies appropriate curricular and co-curricular learning experiences;

4. Develops and implements ongoing program assessment to assure viable programs which prepare students to meet needs and expectations for the workplace and for continuing education, consistent with applicable guidelines.



B. In coordination with other faculty in the discipline area, each faculty member:

1. Develops course descriptions, scope, outcomes, goals, entry and exit competencies;

2. Develops and implements ongoing assessment activities which result in maintenance of courses which meet documented and applicable needs and guidelines

3. Identifies course textbooks and supplementary materials and instructional supplies



III. Professional Development



A. Each faculty member participates in professional development activities consistent with individual, program, and College development, which assures that the faculty member:

1. Maintains up-to-date knowledge and skills in the applicable program and subject area of appointment;

2. Develops and maintains knowledge and skills in use of instructional methods and delivery systems for maximum student achievement levels by diverse students



IV. Service



A. Each faculty member has responsibilities for service in the program/division area assigned, including representing and promoting (marketing) the academic program by carrying out, in coordination with colleagues, the following responsibilities:

1. Identifies potential student markets;

2. Identifies times, locations, and delivery systems to best meet the student markets;

3. Develops and provides accurate information--program goals, connection to specific jobs and continued education, entry expectations, program outcomes, and other information which enables potential students and those who assist them to accurately understand and interpret the program.

4. Provides information directly to potential students, employers of students, transfer college representatives, and others, individually and/or in group settings

B. Each faculty member, especially senior tenured faculty members and program directors, serves the program/division area through assisting to orient, mentor, and evaluate part-time and new full-time faculty members



C. Each faculty member assists in the program/division area in implementation of effective learning activities in and out of the classroom, specifically through such responsibilities as:

1. Provides information about student advisee needs for scheduling purposes, support service needs, etc.

2. Recommends effective course schedule plans and delivery systems

3. Provides guidance and leadership for student organizations

4. Assists in identification of appropriate academic support materials, supplies, and equipment

D. Each faculty member assists to carry out the College's mission and development of the College as a learning community, with specific responsibilities such as:



1. Serves on College committees, task forces, and councils for development of policies, programs, processes, and plans which support development of the internal learning community

2. Serves as advisors to student organizations

3. Assists in development of plans for academic support services and student leadership development experiences

4. Assists with College events and activities

5. Represents the College in carrying out its community and economic development responsibilities within the service area, consistent with professional expertise
