This draft position description represents the consolidation of responsibilities currently carried out part-time by others or not identified in any position descriptions. The final identification of functional responsibilities will need to be coordinated with the student development area. Additionally, the position will need to be reviewed for title and classification consistent with state guidelines.
The Associate Dean is a classified position reporting to the Vice President for Teaching and Learning, with responsibilities for providing leadership assistance in the development and implementation of systems and processes which support multiple learning options, instructional strategies, and delivery systems, with emphasis on assuring academic services to meet diverse student needs and learning styles. The Associate Dean facilitates the development and delivery of support services in coordination with various faculty teams, other academic administrators, student development personnel, institutional technologies personnel, and other colleagues. In carrying out the responsibilities, the Associate Dean is expected to enforce the applicable federal and state laws, policies and guidelines of the WV Board of Directors, accrediting agencies, and the College. More specifically, the Associate Dean has the following responsibilities:
1. Plans and develops distance education programs and courses, including planning and coordination with state coordination groups such as HEITV, SREC, and other coordinating bodies as well as with internal academic leaders and faculty.
2. Develops and implements instructional support systems, processes, and activities which support the delivery of all forms of distance education, including electronic, telecom, HEITV, or other distance education modes. This includes faculty development, orientation for faculty and students, and services which support the delivery and assure high levels of student achievement by those on-campus as well as students in isolated settings.
3. Plans and develops instructional support systems, processes, and activities which support on-site delivery of evening and weekend programs and courses as well as utilization of such means as accelerated and independent study options, to meet diverse individual and group needs, and including faculty development as well as orientation and other support services for students.
4. Plans, develops, and coordinates recommendations and plans regarding materials, equipment, supplies, and services needed to support distance education and other alternative delivery systems and instructional strategies, in coordination with faculty as well as with personnel in student development, institutional technologies, regional campuses, and other areas.
5. Provides assistance and recommendations to the associate dean for academic affairs and division chairs regarding development of academic schedules for evenings, weekends, and distance education consistent with scheduling policies and processes.
6. Develops and implements systems, processes, and professional development activities which support and enable multiple learning strategies such as active contextual learning (service learning, internships, practica, laboratory and clinical experiences), collaborative learning (electronic forums, study groups, tutor led groups), and learning strategies which enhance success for diverse student learning capabilities and styles.
7. Leads and supervises development and implementation of tutoring and supplemental instructional services.
8. Leads and supervises development and implementation of an effective academic advising system, with processes to assist faculty in providing meaningful program orientation, advising, and monitoring of students toward career and educational goal attainment.
9. Coordinates developmental education, including basic academic skills and other course and supplemental activities which support student development for college success, with faculty and student development personnel.
10. Develops recommendations regarding employment of full-time and part-time personnel, to provide academic support in multiple settings, including proctors, tutors, and student assistants,
11. Supervises full-time and part-time personnel in tutoring, supplemental instruction, advising, and other support services.
12. Coordinates preparation and administration of agreements for student placements and experiences in internships, practica, clinical settings, and other student learning situations coordinated with multiple agencies and employers.
13. Develops and implements full-time and part-time faculty orientation and update activities.
14. Completes other related duties as assigned by the Vice President for Teaching and Learning.
